Erick had yet to regain consciousness. It had been less than two days, but the minutes stretched to feel like years. While everyone took turns tending to him, Chris and Watts refused to leave his side and were constantly checking his breathing, which remained strong. Emily was never far away, but Ms. Kozlov and Elsie were doing their best to try and comfort her and keep her busy.
“I found an old anthology on plants in one of the biology classes,” Alice said, when Sam asked what book she had been reading for well over an hour. She and Bruno had been exhausting every source they had in an attempt to bring Erick back around, but without serious medical equipment there was little they could do besides hope he would pull through.
“Does it say anything that might help?” Sam asked, knowing that Alice must have read the book multiple times, but hoping that she found something new.
Alice looked defeated, “Nothing good. We can’t know how much he ingested, but there’s really no treatment for wormwood poisoning. We’re treating the effects, but the longer he’s in the coma the better the chance that he’ll suffer some level of brain damage.”
Small, cold beads of greasy sweat broke out along the back of Sam’s neck and trickled down his back. “Wha...what can we do? There’s gotta be something. Isn’t there some medicine or something?”
“I don’t know Sam,” Alice said and she seemed to sink in on herself, “I’m not a real doctor. I don’t know what to do. Shit! I wish I did, but I never learned about this stuff at any of those bullshit meetings my dad used to make me go to.” Tears began to run down Alice’s cheeks, but she refused to allow herself to cry fully. Sam did not know what to say. They had faced death every day since the dead had risen, but somehow the thought of such a small child dying, especially because of the actions of other human beings, was more than anyone could comprehend. The thought of Erick dying seemed to overload everyone’s minds and they entered their own versions of semi-comas. Sam looked up from where he had buried his face in Alice’s hair and saw Chris sitting next to Erick’s small body. He could see Erick’s chest rising and falling with each breath. Chris held his hand lightly on the small child’s stomach, checking each breath. The posture and actions of Chris’s body spoke of the intense emotions and concern that coursed through him. He had been overtaken by a deep desire to protect Erick, they all had, Erick and Emily were everyone’s child or sibling, but Chris seemed to feel this responsibility at a level deeper than the others. Perhaps it was because no one had ever taken care of him, or because Erick and Emily were alone, much as he had been for most of his childhood. Whatever the reason, Sam could see a rage smoldering within Chris that threatened to consume him if Erick did not get better.
